If you excel in science and like competition, then...

Science Olympiad is the place for you.

Science Olympiad is a National science team competition, with events like Meteorology, Fossils, Crime busters, Write it Do It, Bridge Building, Hovercraft, and so much more!

The Middle School team is limited to only 15 students (Plus a few Alternates) from grades 6-9, so students must compete and try-out for this team.

TRY-OUTS ARE OPEN To all 6th - 9th graders

Please READ ALL of the information on this page, before deciding to try-out.

Things to consider before trying out for the team:

There are many things that are needed  to make a great Science Olympiad, but the TWO most important of all are Dedication and Determination.

1) This team will require a lot of time to prepare.

2) Making a commitment to Science Olympiad is a serious commitment of your time and you need to be aware of that before you try out.

  • Our season typically runs from September through the end of April (May if we advance to Nationals)

  • You should plan on dedicating a minimum of 2-4 hours per week (on your own) to prepare for your events if you wish to Medal at States!)

Attendance is required

3) All members will be expected to participate in scheduled practices to help prepare the team for our competitions. If you have to miss a practice it is expected that you will communicate your situation to your coaches

4) We understand that you might be involved with other activities that require some of your time. Because of this, the coaches are willing to be flexible with the weekly practice dates, however the listed Mandatory dates (The Competition dates and Pack-up Dates) you must attend.

5) A practice Schedule will be posted in the BAND app including large whole team practices as well as mini event focus days where only one (or two) event teams will meet to work on their event.

6) While attending scheduled practices, we encourage our team members to have fun and build strong relationships with their peers, but we also need them to remember why we are there. (To research, study and learn together)

Team work is necessary for success!

7) It is NEVER one persons responsibility to do all of the work.

8) You must work as a team for building and studying events. This means you must listen to ideas of others, and find a way to also respectfully share your ideas.

9) Even though only 15 students can compete at the Regional, State and National tournaments, All Students are expected to help the team prepare and will compete at all invitational tournaments. (Alternates for Regionals and States might be asked to step in at any time for a number of reasons.)

Cost

10) Each team member will be require to pay a small fee to be used to purchase your team shirt

11) Additionally, all team members in grades 7-9 that have not yet paid the yearly Franklin Regional Student Activities Fee, will need to do so, before they are allowed to participate on the team.

12) Fundraising opportunities will also be offered to help offset the cost of supplies needed for building events and other resources and test prep materials for the study events.

Volunteer / Parent Support

13) While our team is run, organized, and lead by our teacher head coaches, many very successful teams rely on high school and alumni student mentors as well as parents and community members to assist with preparing for events. These volunteers often offer support and guidance for an event team, provide a place to study / brainstorm or build. Or they sometimes just simply providing snacks and encouragement.

14) The stronger our support system, the better our team does.

15) After the team has been selected through our Try-outs, the head coaches will ask for volunteers and will host a volunteer / Parent support meeting to outline what's ahead for the coming months.

16) All adult volunteers must have current clearances on file with the district. Please reach out to one of the Head coaches for more information on obtaining these.
