Mr. Leftwich joined Franklin Regional School District in 1980 as a reading specialist at the senior high and after became supervisor of reading for the district. He was appointed interim principal at the junior high (now the middle school) before being named co-principal. In 1994, he took over as principal and finally In May 2003, he was appointed director of instructional services and public relations. Joe was a  passionate individual about many things including his family, his students, the Middle School, jazz music, cycling, Hawaii, raising awareness of cancer and his faith.

Joe was a remarkable man. His wisdom and leadership helped to create the Franklin Regional Middle School, so it is only fitting that we try to honor him with a middle school  scholarship in his name. Every year, the scholarship will be awarded to an eighth grade student that shows the same drive, determination, leadership and respect as the man we are honoring. The scholarship will be held in an account within the Franklin Regional Schools Federal Credit Union and given to the selected student(s) upon graduation from high school.
